Struggling with poor sound quality? Try these 7 options for your home studio

Struggling with Bad Audio? Try These 7 Home Studio Solutions

When it comes to content creation and podcasting, audio quality is everything. Visuals grab attention, but it’s clean, rich sound that keeps viewers hooked. However, achieving perfect audio at home can be challenging — a recording can be ruined in an instant by background noise or echo, poor microphone placement, or a lack of acoustic treatment.

Whether you’re starting your podcast or recording Reels, here are 7 key tips to help you achieve studio-quality sound without leaving home.

Essential Creative Studio Tools and Equipment Used at Villo Studio Canggu

Essential Equipment for Starting a Podcast

Choose the right microphone. Not all microphones are created equal. If you’re recording vocals or dialogue, condenser microphones like the Audio-Technica AT2020 or dynamic microphones such as the Shure SM7B are excellent choices. Condenser microphones capture clean detail, while dynamic microphones are better at rejecting background noise — ideal for untreated rooms.

🎧 Tip: Always use a pop filter to avoid harsh plosive sounds (such as “P” and “B”).

Control Your Room’s Acoustics

Hard surfaces reflect sound, creating echo. To reduce reverberation:

  • record in small rooms with carpets, curtains, or bookshelves;
  • add sound-absorbing panels or thick blankets to the walls;
  • avoid recording near windows or in rooms with tiled floors.

A quiet, “dead” room is the ideal option — any effects can always be added later during mixing.

Pay Attention to Microphone Placement

Is your microphone too far away? You’ll capture a lot of room noise. Too close? You’ll get distortion and heavy breathing.

Try to position the microphone approximately 15–20 cm from your face, at a slight angle. Maintain good posture and speak directly into the microphone without raising your voice to a shout.

Use a Digital Audio Interface

If you have an XLR microphone, connect it via a USB audio interface such as the Focusrite Scarlett or Rode AI-1. These devices amplify the microphone signal and ensure a clean recording straight to your computer.

Tip: avoid using built-in laptop or webcam microphones — they simply are not designed for professional quality.

Eliminate Background Noise

Switch off fans, air conditioners, and anything humming in the background:

  • disable notifications;
  • put your phone on silent;
  • where possible, record at quieter times of day.

You can also use noise reduction plugins during editing, but always aim to capture the cleanest possible sound from the start.

Record in a DAW, Not a Voice Memo App

Use a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Audacity (free), Adobe Audition, or GarageBand for greater control.

DAWs allow you to:

  • adjust volume levels (gain) and EQ;
  • remove noise and mouth sounds (lip smacks, clicks);
  • export in formats ready for podcast publishing.

Monitor Your Sound While Recording

Use closed-back headphones to monitor your audio in real time. This will help you catch clipping (distortion), mouth sounds, or background interference without wasting an entire session.
